What you can do
Give the floor a checked production instruction
Each work order connects product, order and resource with planned quantity, planned start, planned end and status. Production Planner uses the work release action to release the exact Draft record after its prerequisites pass. The linked sales order must already be Approved, and the resource must be available for a feasible non-overlapping interval.
The order reference preserves the demand context for the run. Sales order lines identify ordered items and quantities, while the order links to the customer record. These records help the planner check the intended work. The planner follows that demand context before handing the instruction to the operator.
How the work is organized
Release freezes the inputs used for the decision. A later change to a product, resource or planned quantity needs review under the operating amendment rules. The released instruction should remain explainable against the version the planner checked.
- Eligible draft. Start from the exact work order in Draft and inspect its linked demand.
- Release checks. The work release action validates actor identity, approved order, positive planned quantity, resource availability and the complete schedule.
- Floor handoff. Successful release changes status from Draft to Released; batch identity is created when production begins through the production interval action.
What to agree during setup
Confirm who provides approved sales orders and how that approval is verified before release. Manager owns the business approval prerequisite. Agree the approval path or controlled import from the system that owns the order decision, then test that evidence before live release.
Agree how planned intervals reflect actual resource capacity and operating dates. Review the resource’s daily capacity and availability alongside the agreed operating dates. Preserve an explicit planning basis and test the release workflow’s feasible-schedule checks. A resource marked Maintenance cannot become available merely because a draft has a desirable delivery date.
Check the handoff on an actual case
Production Planner prepares a work order for a finished product linked to an Approved customer order. They choose an Available resource, positive planned quantity and a feasible planned start to planned end interval. The work release action resolves the planner through the staff record’s linked user account, validates the frozen inputs and returns the released work order.
Prepare another draft for the same resource with an overlapping interval. Its release should be rejected even when the customer demand is valid. Moving the second interval requires a fresh check against all relevant work; changing only the start date is insufficient if the intervals still overlap.
Also rehearse an order still in Draft and a work order with zero planned quantity. Both must fail their release prerequisites. After a successful release, inspect batches and confirm that release alone has not created a production lot. The operator’s later production action is responsible for that identity.
What your team sees
Configure distinct views for preparation and released work:
- Open work orders — See active production instructions with demand, product, resource and planned quantity.
- Draft work order release checks — Review drafts whose release prerequisites still need attention.
- Work order board — Discuss the recorded production lifecycle without inferring approval authority from a board column.
Follow the work through
Draft to released work defines the handoff. Follow released work into material issue to production log and check the roles before enabling actions.
