What you can do
Read the stock trail
A reservation claims a quantity for a request, item, location and optional lot. Its state distinguishes an active claim from a released or consumed one, and its expiry gives the team a point to revisit. A reservation is a claim on stock; the posted movement is the record of quantity change. Keeping those records separate helps the team explain available stock without treating a claim as an issue.
A stock movement links to a request, item and location. It can also point to a lot and to an earlier movement it reverses. Signed quantity describes the direction of change, while the posted flag distinguishes a posted movement. The source effect key and operation receipt provide a way to trace the action that produced the movement.
How the work is organized
- Claim. Inventory Coordinator associates a reservation with the exact stock context and request.
- Post. A posted movement records the signed quantity and source of a stock change.
- Correct. A compensating movement can refer to the earlier movement while preserving its history.
What to agree during setup
Agree which stock is eligible for reservation by lot release state and expiry. Decide when an active reservation is consumed or released and who checks an expired claim. Define the base unit used for each item and the sign convention for movement quantity. Decide how operation keys and source effect keys are assigned so repeated actions can be recognized during reconciliation.
For opening stock, agree a cutoff and inspect posted movements and active claims at that point. If another inventory system feeds these records, define the connection, owner and reconciliation schedule. A received file should retain enough identity to link the lot, location and request.
Check the handoff on an actual case
An approved request needs units from a released lot. Inventory Coordinator checks the posted movement history for that item, location and lot, then checks active reservations for the same stock. A claim is recorded for the request. The posted movement associated with the completed work carries the signed quantity and a trace back to the request.
Suppose the action needs correction. The compensating movement refers to the original. The team can see both directions of quantity change and the reservation state, then reconcile the operation receipt. A direct edit to the original movement would remove the sequence needed to explain the result.
What your team sees
- Active reservations — Current claims with quantity, stock context and expiry.
- Posted movements — Quantity history tied to the originating request.
- Approved requests — Work whose reviewed scope can be checked against stock records.
Follow the work through
Use stock outcome for reservation and movement context and evidence reconciliation for uncertain results.
