What you can do
Read the physical stock trail
A posted stock movement has a signed quantity, occurrence date, item, storage location and parent request. It can link a lot and carries a line number and revision. A positive and a negative quantity have different physical meanings, so the team should read the sign alongside the request action and site. The movement can also retain unit cost in USD and an expiry date when those details apply.
For consigned stock, the movement trail matters because physical custody and confirmed commercial use are separate events. A receipt at a site, a transfer between sites and an issue for consumption may each have different evidence and review. Inventory Reviewer can inspect the request and decision behind a movement; Auditor can inspect the signed effect and the later usage record.
How the work is organized
- Source. The parent request and source effect key connect a posted quantity to its originating action.
- Identity. Item, location and optional lot identify the stock affected.
- Correction. A compensating movement links back to the earlier movement through its reversal reference.
What to agree during setup
Define which action creates a positive quantity and which creates a negative one for each location. Agree how line numbers are assigned when an action involves more than one stock line. The item code, lot code and base unit stored on a movement should be consistent with its linked item and lot records. Decide when unit cost is captured and how the team handles a value that is unavailable.
Agree a correction procedure that retains the posted record. A reviewer should inspect why the earlier quantity was wrong, authorize the compensating action and check that the new movement points to the original. The original request, decision and operation receipt should remain readable after the correction.
Check the handoff on an actual case
Follow a reviewed request for inspected consigned stock through a completed operation receipt to its posted signed movement. Verify the item, location, lot and quantity against the request and attachment. Then simulate a discovered quantity error in the rehearsal. Add a reviewed compensating movement linked to the original and compare the combined signed effect with the physical stock position.
Do not edit away the original line in the rehearsal. Auditor needs to see the first posting, the correction and who reviewed the change. If the request is tied to confirmed usage, compare the corrected movement history with the consumed units. A mismatch belongs in the exception review before billing reconciliation.
