What you can do
Make the station handoff explicit
An operator assignment says who is expected at a station, which work order they are handling and when the assignment begins and ends. Production Operator submits that assignment with linked personnel, work order and resource records. The assignment check validates the actor, references, interval and station scheduling before accepting the record.
This gives the floor a named handoff when work changes hands. Production Planner can compare the assignment with the work order’s planned window. The next operator can see which station and job the assignment concerns, while production intervals record the output actually reported against that work. Keep those purposes clear during shift changes so a planned presence is not mistaken for completed production.
How the work is organized
- Personnel identity. Select the person represented by the operator’s user account. An active personnel record provides a consistent identity for assignments and production intervals, even when several people share a job title.
- Station and work. Link the assignment to the intended resource and work order. Review both together before starting, because a familiar station name does not establish which production job belongs there.
- Working interval. Enter the assignment start and end and check the surrounding station schedule. The submission validates the interval and scheduling before the assignment is committed to production.
What to agree during setup
Admin and Production Planner should agree how personnel names map to user accounts. Use named accounts for the operators who submit work and review an example where similar names could lead to the wrong selection. Decide who keeps personnel active status current when someone changes duties or leaves the floor team.
Agree the time convention used for shifts and the procedure for a job that crosses a shift boundary. Explain how the team changes an assignment when a machine becomes unavailable, and who checks the replacement station. Keep the station’s availability current alongside its assignments. A schedule that operators trust needs a clear owner when a job moves or finishes later than expected.
Check the handoff on an actual case
Prepare a Released work order for brackets at the press. Production Operator submits an assignment covering the intended morning interval and checks that it points to their personnel record. Production Planner reviews the station and work order together. Then rehearse a second assignment that conflicts with the station schedule and inspect the validation response before accepting any changed plan.
Repeat with an end time earlier than the start and with an operator identity that does not match the submitting actor’s authority. Both cases should stop before a production assignment is committed. Finally, move the rehearsal to an authorized person and valid interval. Have that operator open the work order and identify where they will report good and scrap units after production. This checks the handoff beyond the assignment form itself.
