What you can do

Preserve the source before interpreting consumption

A meter reading records the value observed at a particular time against the selected meter. Energy Analyst keeps the quality flag with that value so the reviewer can distinguish Valid, Estimated, Missing and Invalid source information. A value that needs investigation should remain recognizable throughout the review.

The reading-validation process accounts for cumulative-register resets and derives a non-overlapping energy interval for reviewer validation. That handoff separates a source observation from the consumption quantity the team will use in its energy review. Energy Reviewer needs to understand the meter, unit and interval boundaries before accepting the result.

How the work is organized

  • Source capture. Energy Analyst selects the meter and records the reading date, value and quality. The meter’s site, unit and reading mode provide the context for interpreting the submission.
  • Register interpretation. Cumulative readings require attention to the way the register changes, including resets. The derivation process should apply the agreed reset handling rather than treating every lower value as an ordinary consumption change.
  • Interval preparation. The resulting energy interval carries its start, end, quantity and unit into review. Received identifies an interval waiting for the validation decision; it does not mean the quantity has already been accepted.

What to agree during setup

Agree the source of readings and how the team marks missing or estimated information. Confirm the meter’s reading mode before importing a series, and review the actual reset-handling rule with the source owner. A meter replacement, reset or corrected reading needs enough context for the reviewer to interpret the resulting interval.

Define the interval-boundary convention and how overlapping submissions are handled. The team should be able to explain which period an accepted quantity covers. Confirm the input-date and timezone practice as part of the same setup, especially when the building data comes from a separate monitoring source.

Check the handoff on an actual case

Use a cumulative electricity meter at the pilot building. Capture a valid source reading and the later reading used for the consumption interval. Energy Analyst reviews the source values and the derived quantity before passing the interval to Energy Reviewer.

Introduce a register reset into the rehearsal using the source context required by the agreed rule. Check that the resulting interval is handled through that rule instead of producing an unexplained difference. Then submit a period that overlaps an existing interval and confirm that the validation process does not treat both quantities as independent accepted consumption for the same scope.

Include an Estimated or Missing source reading and inspect how its quality is presented to the reviewer. The purpose is to make the evidence understandable before a decision, rather than hiding a questionable source behind an apparently complete interval. Keep the original meter identity visible throughout the exercise.

What your team sees

  • Meter Reading Register — Dated source values with their meter and quality flag.
  • Reading Quality Exceptions — Estimated, missing and invalid readings requiring attention.
  • Energy Review Queue — Derived intervals waiting for the review of their period, quantity and unit.

Follow the work through

Follow Meter reading to validated interval, then inspect accepted quantities through Energy Review and Tariffs.
