What you can do
Release a part definition the floor can use
The parts catalog identifies each part by its number, description, item type and stocking unit. The bill of materials carries a version and the dates when it applies. Its component lines identify the consumed part, quantity per unit and scrap allowance. Routings describe the operation sequence, work center and expected setup and run time. Production Planner maintains these definitions so a work order can refer to the intended bill and routing instead of relying on a copied spreadsheet.
How the work is organized
An engineering change request identifies the product, reason for the change and expected cost effect. Draft, Defined and Assessed distinguish preparation from a decision-ready change. Approved and Applied describe later control points; they must refer to the same reviewed product and revision.
- Identify the stocking unit. The part and its bill component lines use the agreed EA, KG, L or M stocking unit. Agree any conversion before importing quantities.
- Check the consumed parts. Each bill component line connects a consumed part to its parent bill. Review the quantity per unit and scrap allowance against an actual finished unit.
- Review the operation sequence. Each routing operation identifies its sequence, work center and required quality check, with setup time and run time per unit.
What to agree during setup
Agree which bill becomes Active on the effective date, which routing version production uses and how an approved change is applied. Check the effective bill and routing version together before applying a change. Confirm the assigned Approver and what supply and cost evidence they need. Ask the team to explain when existing work should finish under its earlier plan and when a separately reviewed change is necessary. Retain the reason for that choice.
Check the handoff on an actual case
A component supplier discontinues the casting used in an assembly. Production Planner raises a change request for supplier discontinuation and identifies the affected product. The planner prepares the changed component requirement and checks the affected bill version. Buyer examines whether the replacement can be supplied. Accountant reviews the cost consequence through cost rollups and cost standards before the decision is requested.
The assigned Approver needs the assessed change and its effective date together. After approval, the planner applies the reviewed revision and checks the work order prepared from it. An order already released needs explicit review of its referenced bill, issued material and completed operations before anyone changes its execution plan. Keep the earlier production evidence available when comparing the old and new requirements. Rehearse a rejected change as well: the active bill must remain explainable and the rejected request must not reach Applied through a direct edit.
What your team sees
- Engineering Change Review — Draft, Defined and Assessed changes with reason, effective date and cost effect.
- Pending Cost Rollups — Cost review work linked to the product, bill and routing under consideration.
Follow the work through
Engineering change to effective revision sets out the decision. Demand to finished parts shows how the reviewed definition reaches a work order. Confirm import keys in the data model.
What it keeps track of
Data model- Products
- Catalog of all items: finished goods, sub-assemblies, raw materials, components, and consumables.
- Bill of materials
- BOM header - the recipe for producing a given product.
- BOM components
- Each raw or sub-assembly consumed to build the parent product.
- Routings
- Routing header - the sequence of operations required to build a product.
- Routing operations
- Each operation in the routing sequence.
- Engineering change orders
- An engineering change order groups the item, bill and routing edits that land together, carries its approvals, and applies on an effective date.
Who uses it
Permissions- Production Planner
- , Buyer, Accountant, Approver, Plant Administrator.
- Production Planner
- Maintains engineering definitions.
- Buyer
- And Accountant contribute supply and cost review within their own access.
- Approver
- Checks the assessed scope before Production Planner applies the accepted change.
