What you can do
Decide what happens to the affected material
Quality inspections record what was inspected and how much was accepted or rejected. Inspection results store Pass or Fail evidence for each inspection characteristic, including measured value and the selected instrument. Quality holds identify the lot, goods receipt or work order operation that cannot proceed. Quality Inspector reviews that evidence before choosing the permitted disposition and releasing, scrapping or returning the held material. Lot and serial records then help explain where the affected parts came from and where they went.
How the work is organized
Inspection plans identify the inspection type, sampling rule, version and effective date. Instrument records retain calibration dates and whether equipment is in service, overdue or out of service. A nonconformance report identifies the affected product and source of the problem. Corrective actions have an owner, with separate completion and verification dates.
- Use a valid inspection instrument. The rule excludes an overdue instrument. Check the calibration due date and instrument status before accepting the recorded measurement.
- Keep the hold attached to its scope. The hold identifies a lot, goods receipt or work order operation. The operation number matters when the hold applies to a particular operation.
- Trace the released quantity. Lots link product, supplier and work order. Serial records link a unit to its lot, work order and delivery; movement references require careful mapping during the trace rehearsal.
What to agree during setup
Agree required inspections, acceptable dispositions and who independently verifies a corrective action. Keep conformance, material-test and calibration documents with the relevant part, supplier or lot evidence. Agree who inspects the lot and serial history during an investigation. If a claim review needs shipment evidence, name the person who prepares it and the reviewer who checks it. Rehearse a failed measurement, a released lot and an independently verified corrective action so the team can explain each outcome.
Check the handoff on an actual case
An incoming component fails its measured characteristic. Quality Inspector records the Fail result with the instrument and inspection reference, raises nonconformance reports and places the affected receipt or lot on hold. The stock-handling actor attempts an issue to production. The command must fail while the hold applies, even when inventory still shows quantity on hand.
The inspector evaluates the evidence and records a permitted disposition, such as return to vendor or Accept. A release retains the deciding employee and release date with the original hold. A corrective action remains open until the assigned owner completes the work and a different verifier checks it. During rehearsal, attempt to use an Overdue instrument and then trace an accepted unit from its serial record to its delivery. Ask the team to explain the supplier lot and finished unit involved, then compare the recorded movement evidence. Check that a similarly described part from another lot is kept outside the affected scope.
What your team sees
- Quality Holds — Active holds with their scope and pending disposition.
- Available Lots — Available lots with supplier evidence, expiry dates and remaining quantity.
- Incoming Inspection Queue — Receipts awaiting the incoming inspection decision.
Follow the work through
Inspection to quality release rehearses the disposition. part fitment to warranty decision explains the separate claim evidence. Prepare source links using the data model.
What it keeps track of
Data model- Inspection plans
- What to check for an item at a point, incoming, in-process at an operation or final, with the sampling rule; versioned.
- Inspection characteristics
- One characteristic on a plan: what is measured, how, with which instrument, and the limits.
- Quality inspections
- Quality inspections on incoming material, in-process, and final release.
- Inspection results
- The measured value or pass and fail per characteristic on one inspection.
- Instruments
- Gauges and instruments with calibration intervals; an overdue instrument cannot be selected on an inspection.
- Certificates
- Certificates of conformance, material test reports and calibration certificates, attached to a supplier lot or an instrument.
- Quality holds
- A hold on a lot, a receipt or a work-order operation: nothing on hold can be issued, shipped or completed until the disposition lifts it.
- Non conformance reports
- A failed inspection, a customer complaint or a floor observation, pointing at the lot, supplier, machine and operator, with its root cause.
- Corrective actions
- The action that closes a non-conformance: an owner, a due date, and a verification by someone else before it closes.
- Lots
- A quantity received or made together: supplier lot, receipt date and expiry, traced through issue, production and shipment.
- Serials
- One record per serialised unit: its lot, the work order that made it and the delivery it left on.
Who uses it
Permissions- Quality Inspector
- , Plant Administrator.
- Quality Inspector
- Manages inspections, holds and corrective actions.
- Plant Administrator
- Supports lot and serial investigation.
- Agree the access each person needs before assigning the trace, and rehearse it with their ordinary account.
