What you can do

Give production a reviewed definition

The product master distinguishes finished goods and subassemblies from raw materials, components and consumables. Its SKU, stocking unit and lot-controlled setting determine how the team identifies and handles material. A bill of materials links a dated version to the parent product; its component lines identify each component and the quantity required. Routings and routing operations describe where work happens and whether an operation requires a quality check. Production Planner can prepare a consistent manufacturing definition before an order is released against it.

How the work is organized

  • Item identity. Keep the same SKU associated with the same product during import and correction. Check description, item type, stocking unit and Active alongside the stocking and purchasing conventions. A convenient display label cannot resolve a mismatched product reference in production.
  • Effective definitions. The bill uses Draft, Active and Obsolete with effective start and end dates; the routing retains its own version and status. Review which definition the work order references before changing the currently active master. Review routing versions alongside the dated bill that the order uses.
  • Operation requirements. Each routing operation retains operation number, work center, setup and run times, and the quality-check requirement. Connect inspection planning to the exact operation where the check applies. An order with a different route must receive its own review of those requirements.

What to agree during setup

Production Planner and Quality Inspector agree when a bill or route is ready for use and what evidence is needed for a change. The engineering change order retains the reason, requested date and the affected product, bill or route, with Draft, Defined, Assessed, Approved, Applied and Verified available as statuses. Assign the independent Approver decision route and its supporting approvals record. For master changes, verify the engineering change order approval mapping and the SKU used as its source reference before enabling the reviewed route.

Check the handoff on an actual case

Rehearse a supplier material change affecting an active bill. Buyer identifies the changed supply condition, then Production Planner prepares engineering change orders with the affected product and bill of materials. A change remains reviewable while its cost and inspection consequences are assessed. A draft replacement should not quietly alter the components on work already released under the earlier bill reference.

Use a released work-order record to inspect its bill of materials and routing references, then examine the generated work order components and work order operations. Compare the component stocking unit and quantity per with the demand that was released. Confirm that a missing required attribute refuses the master-change command and that a repeated unresolved MDM request does not create another pending approval. The quality owner also checks that a newly required inspection is attached to the intended operation before applying the change.

What your team sees

  • Active product recipes — Review the active bill’s product, version and effective dates.
  • Production schedule — Inspect the operation context that a released routing produces.
  • Cost activation review — Follow costing work affected by a changed bill or route.

Follow the work through

Plan and execute production after checking the changed definition. Review the data model before importing references, and use implementation to rehearse the change policy.

What it keeps track of

Data model
Products
Catalog of all items: finished goods, sub-assemblies, raw materials, components, and consumables.
Bill of materials
BOM header - the recipe for producing a given product.
BOM components
Each raw or sub-assembly consumed to build the parent product.
Routings
Routing header - the sequence of operations required to build a product.
Routing operations
Each operation in the routing sequence.
Engineering change orders
An engineering change order groups the item, bill and routing edits that land together, carries its approvals, and applies on an effective date.
Approvals
One decision on a requisition, purchase order, count variance, change order or supplier invoice: who decided, when, and the reason on the record.
Work orders
Shop-floor orders to produce a specific product in a specific quantity.
Work order components
Exploded BOM demand for a work order - what raw material is needed and from where.
Work order operations
Exploded routing steps for a work order - what runs where, in what sequence.
Cost rollups
A cost rollup run: it walks the bill and routing into a pending standard, is reviewed, and activates with a revaluation entry.

Who uses it

Permissions
Production Planner
, Quality Inspector, Buyer, Approver, Accountant.
Production Planner
Maintains engineering records; Quality Inspector defines inspection work.
Buyer
Reviews supply implications, Approver reviews the controlled decision, and Accountant checks costing consequences within their declared access.
