What you can do

Give every observation a production window

A production result needs an agreed period and an agreed resource. Production Planner defines the window with its start and end, planned minutes and ideal cycle in seconds. Operators then attach run evidence to that window. The Business Overview uses this basis when bringing availability, performance, quality and OEE together for review.

A window can cover a scheduled run on a machine without being interchangeable with the work order on that machine. Keep the planning boundary clear when work crosses a shift or a resource handles different products. The planner names each window so the operator can identify the correct period before recording a count.

How the work is organized

  • Resource readiness. Production Planner checks whether the machine is Available, Maintenance or Unavailable and reviews its daily capacity. A resource’s capacity describes planning context; the window carries the planned minutes used for the particular review.
  • Window basis. The planner sets the interval and ideal cycle before capture. The guarded window command validates the basis and preserves the original result on an identical retry. Changing that saved input requires resolving the conflict.
  • Evidence boundary. Production Operator selects the intended window when recording an observation or stop. Quality Reviewer can then examine a common period rather than compare records that happened to arrive on the same day.

What to agree during setup

Agree the shift clock, time zone and naming convention. Decide how breaks affect planned minutes and how a run crossing midnight is represented. Set the ideal cycle in seconds for the production being reviewed, and establish who checks it when the operating basis changes.

Also agree how windows relate operationally to work orders using the same resource. Use resource and time boundaries during the review. Keep overlapping windows visible to the planner so the same production is not casually included in different comparisons. A revised plan needs an explicit handling decision before operators continue capture.

Check the handoff on an actual case

Rehearse a window called Press A morning with a scheduled interval from 08:00 to 12:00. Production Planner enters the agreed planned minutes and cycle basis, checks that Press A is Available, and captures the window. Production Operator opens that named period before entering the run observation.

Repeat the capture with unchanged input and confirm that the team sees the original saved outcome. Then change the planned minutes for that same window and check that the conflict reaches the planner for resolution. Review a stop near the end of the interval and make sure everyone agrees which period owns it. These are rehearsal inputs, not targets for the plant.

What your team sees

  • Planned Production Windows Queue — Upcoming and earlier windows with the resource, interval and production basis together.
  • Resource Readiness Board — Machines with readiness and daily capacity so the planner can inspect exceptions before release.

Follow the work through

Continue with planning and release, then capture run evidence. Set the starting conventions in implementation.

The planner owns the basis; operators use it during capture, and reviewers check that the evidence belongs to that period.
