What you can do

Start the season with the rules and the teams

A season records the league name, the season name, its start and end dates and the scoring policy, such as three points for a win and one for a draw. The scoring policy is what the standings use when results are confirmed, so it is agreed before the first fixture.

Teams register for the season with a team name, the season and the coach. A team is Registered when it applies, Approved once the League Coordinator accepts it and Active when it is cleared to play. A team that breaches league rules can be Suspended.

How the work is organized

  • One scoring policy per season. Standings for the season are always worked out the same way.
  • Approval before fixtures. Only approved and active teams are scheduled.
  • A named coach. Each team names its coach, who keeps the roster and runs training.

What to agree during setup

Agree the league’s divisions and how each becomes a season record. Write down the scoring policy, including tie-breakers you apply when reading the table. Decide what a team must provide to be approved: a minimum roster, a fee, a home venue. Agree the grounds for suspension and who decides.

Check the handoff on an actual case

A community soccer league opens its spring season, running from 1 March to 31 May with three points for a win and one for a draw. Twelve teams register. The League Coordinator checks each team’s coach and roster and approves eleven. The twelfth has only nine registered players against a minimum of fourteen, so it stays Registered until the coach adds players.

Two weeks later the team reaches fourteen players, the coordinator approves it and sets it Active, and it joins the fixture list. In April one team fields an unregistered player twice; the coordinator suspends it and its next fixtures are postponed while the league committee meets.
