Identify the stock precisely

An inventory position identifies the item, warehouse, location, license plate, lot or serial, receiving provenance and order ownership where applicable. These distinctions survive a move or repack. Two units of the same SKU can have different expiry dates, restrictions or commitments and must not become interchangeable merely because they share a bin.

Detail Operational use
Item and base quantity Compare receiving, movement and order quantities in one unit
Location and license plate Find the physical goods
Lot, serial and expiry Apply tracking and shelf-life restrictions
Receipt provenance Trace the original confirmed arrival or migration baseline
Stock status Exclude held, quarantined, damaged or expired goods
Reservation and order ownership Keep committed goods available to the correct order

Inventory is a current balance, not the source of receiving history. Posted receipt confirmations remain unchanged when their stock moves or ships. Any correction links to its original event rather than erasing the evidence. It also checks the remaining effect and current descendant positions: a reversal cannot create negative stock, orphan a reservation or undo an actual shipment without the corresponding evidence.

Handle containers without duplicating stock

A license plate can represent a pallet, carton, tote or another handling unit. Parent and child links show that cartons sit on a pallet. Quantity belongs to the actual contents; the parent does not hold an additional copy of its children’s stock.

Plate status describes its handling progress, from receiving and storage through picking, staging and shipment. A picked tote still contains warehouse stock. A packed or manifested carton also remains on hand until confirmed carrier handover causes its outbound issue.

Hold reason and disposition record damage, quality concerns, expiry, recall or a pending return. The authorized release, rework, scrap or return decision is separate from moving the plate. A move to an ordinary bin cannot silently clear a hold.

Reserve once through fulfillment

InventoryReservations is the single ledger for order commitments. At intake, a soft reservation consumes eligible availability. Wave release converts that commitment to identified hard allocations; it does not add a second reservation for the same demand.

Pick and pack transfers carry the reservation into the destination tote or carton. Scanned carton contents retain Picked claims until complete bundle and weight verification converts them to Packed, without another physical transfer. The goods stay committed to the order while physically on hand. Shorts, cancellation, replanning and confirmed shipment have explicit release or consumption effects, so unused claims do not remain indefinitely and a retry does not free stock twice.

Allocation checks status, lot requirements, minimum shelf life and remaining eligible quantity. First-expiring eligible stock can be preferred where expiry matters; other selection rules still respect provenance and existing commitments. An expired or held position is unavailable even when its numerical balance is positive.

Follow every quantity movement

StockEvents groups each receiving, transfer, adjustment or shipping action. Its signed StockMovements show the exact positions and base quantities affected. Internal transfers balance to zero: a pick moves stock from a bin into an order-specific tote, and packing moves it from that tote into a carton.

LPNMovements records container travel and nesting history. It complements the quantity ledger rather than replacing it. A loose-item transfer needs its own item and tracking identity even when no whole container changes location. Stable event identities make repeated confirmations safe to reconcile without posting another movement.

Correct balances with evidence

Inventory has no ordinary manual on-hand edit. Counts and investigated exceptions can propose adjustments, with a reason, source evidence and the applicable approval. A count locks its location and records the expected version before comparing quantities. An expired lock or changed source forces renewed reconciliation.

Warehouse policy sets tolerances and value thresholds. Zero expected quantity forces discovery review. Missing or stale cost requires independent Warehouse Manager review and usable cost evidence before posting. Eligible below-threshold existing-stock corrections may use the policy’s explicit controller self-confirmation exception; discovered, identity-changing, reserved or order-owned stock requires independent manager approval. Posted corrections retain their approval and signed stock effect; upstream delivery retries do not repeat the correction.

Review position and history

Inventory by Location supports current-stock investigation. LPN History shows where a plate has been, while Expiring Lots identifies shelf-life exposure. Bin Occupancy helps review storage use. Financial valuation remains with the connected accounting or inventory system; an integration must distinguish warehouse events from position snapshots so it does not apply the same quantity twice.
