Plan what belongs in each carton

Cartonization proposes a carton type and bundle for each part of an order. CartonizationLines records the planned order lines and base quantities inside that bundle. The plan is more than a weight estimate: it identifies the contents the packer should expect.

Item dimensions, weight, carton capacity and tare inform the proposal. Dimensional weight uses the configured carrier divisor, and the greater of actual and dimensional weight provides a planning comparison. That estimate does not guarantee the carrier’s invoiced charge. Missing dimensions, invalid unit conversions or an unsuitable carton must be resolved before relying on the plan.

A full-pallet plan uses the same contents and weight verification through a PackTasks record, with an output pallet instead of an invented carton. If the picked goods already occupy that pallet, verification changes the reservation stage without posting a second physical quantity transfer. Freight documents then follow the verified shipment. A multi-carton order retains separate bundle contents. An order-specific picked tote can feed those cartons without losing which customer owns the stock. If the physical pack differs from the proposal, the changed contents and carton choice must be reconciled before verification and labeling.

Scan, transfer and verify

1. Scan the source tote and the destination shipping carton.
2. Confirm each order line’s actual quantity, including required lot and serial identities.
3. Transfer those exact stock positions from the tote into the carton and record the carton contents.
4. Weigh the completed carton and compare it with the expected contents and tare under the configured tolerance.

The paired stock movements conserve quantity. The carton holds the transferred positions and their Picked claims; the tote no longer holds those units. Only complete bundle and weight verification converts Picked claims to Packed, without another stock movement. An incomplete carton remains order-owned Picked stock and cannot be tendered. Replaying a pack confirmation cannot leave stock in both containers. Parent-pallet nesting describes how cartons are carried without creating another inventory balance.

A weight difference can reveal a packing problem, but a passing weight check is not proof that every item is correct. Item scans, quantity reconciliation and tracking identity remain required. Wrong items, missing goods, damage, missing cartons and weight differences put the task on hold with a reason and supporting evidence.
